For second graders, standard LAFS.2.SL.1.2 require students to “Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media”. I took this to mean that students need to be able to retell the main point of a story presented in various modes. Based on my current skills, I do not feel prepared to implement this standard. I don’t think I have a very accurate gauge of a second-grader’s current skill level in ELA. To implement this standard, I believe I would need to learn a bit more about child development.
I looked through resources that a teacher of second-grade science would use. I found a resource that details a lesson plan to teach students about ecosystems in the Everglades. The resource included a plan for a play the students could act out, along with pdfs of relevant material and visuals for the play and the lesson. I might use this in a classroom if the Everglade ecosystem was a subject I was very unfamiliar with. I could also use this resource if I was running short on time to plan a lesson, as it is much quicker to put together a pre-existing lesson plan than it is to create a new one. By using this resource, I could ensure that my students learned the material in an engaging and effective way.
As a teacher, it’s important to be a proficient internet searcher because you should have your references ready to go during a class. If something goes wrong, you should be able to quickly find the website you need, rather than spend valuable class time searching. Of all the Internet searching skills I learned this week, I will likely use the Google Search with omitted words, as I believe that will be a very useful skill. In high school, I learned how to use the advanced search function in Google. This tool allows you to search for websites by type, narrowing down your options to only .edu sites, making it easier to look for scholarly works.
Hi Carolina! I too find the skill to use asterisk for forgotten words very helpful. I can never remember the complete title of books or articles and spend a long time trying to find them. I liked how you chose an activity regarding the everglades. That is so relevant to a for a school located in Florida. Nice Job.
ReplyDeleteHi Carolina after reading your post I can tell that it came out great ! your wording and just the way you express how you would teach your standard is perfect.
